Ruby Ann and I love the joy of creating beautiful fall tablescapes, especially in our cozy cottage dining area.

Last year, we brought together autumn leaves(for the faux tree in the background), faux pumpkins(ps: Dollar Tree find that we painted white and placed a wooden stem inside each one), and linen placemats (Home Goods for $19.00) to design a simple yet elegant fall table setting.

Our experience in crafting seasonal decor makes us excited to share this with you.

We love making our cottage warm and inviting for ourselves and for family and friends.

We hope you find this blog post inspirational and helpful for your Autumn tables-cape.

Tips for Making a Cozy Cottage Autumn (Fall) Tablescape

  • Choose a table covering or Center Piece. Start with a neutral tablecloth or runner to set the foundation for your design. Or use a wooden rectangle wooden box(like we have here on our cottage table DIY for the box coming soon:)!!) with faux pumpkins, labs ear and sunflower faux foliage. Add in some fairy lights too.
  • Stick to a color scheme. Deep reds, gold accents, and earthy tones create a cohesive look.
  • Layer your place settings. Use white plates, cloth napkins, and napkin rings or velvet ribbon to add texture and elegance.
  • Add a centerpiece. Incorporate faux pumpkins, autumn leaves or sunflowers, and votive or taper candles to create a focal point. We used thrifted antique brass taper candle holders with orange taper candles from Hobby Lobby.
  • Personalize with place cards. Handwritten place cards add a personal touch and make guests feel special. Or you can use our FREE Printable Autumn Place Cards.

How To Create a Cozy Cottage Autumn Tablescape

Step 1: Use a natural centerpiece base

Ditch the tablecloth and start with a natural rectangle whitewashed box as your centerpiece base. Fill the box with faux white pumpkins that have charming wooden stick stems for a rustic touch. Add faux lamb’s wool foliage and sunflowers to create a charming cottage autumn vibe. This centerpiece will act as the focal point of your table, setting the stage for your cozy design.

Step 2: Layer your place settings

Lay linen placemats at each seat to frame the dining area. Add white plates on top for a classic and clean look. Fold cloth napkins neatly and secure them with seasonal napkin rings—choose styles that complement your fall theme, such as gold leaves or rustic wood accents.

Step 3: Add natural elements around the centerpiece

Scatter small faux autumn leaves, pinecones, or acorns around the whitewashed box to extend the fall theme across the table. This simple touch ties the centerpiece to the rest of the decor while adding texture and dimension.

Step 4: Add warm lighting

Place votive candles or small lanterns around the centerpiece for a cozy glow. Use soft, warm lighting to enhance the inviting cottage atmosphere, perfect for creating an intimate and welcoming dinner setting.

Step 5: Personalize with thoughtful details

Complete the tablescape by adding handwritten place cards at each setting for a personal and thoughtful touch. Include small decorative items like tiny pumpkins, sprigs of rosemary, or even cinnamon sticks for a touch of autumn charm. And antique silverware adds a cottage charm to your table.

Storage Ideas for a Cozy Cottage Autumn Tablescape

When the season ends, storing your autumn tablescape decor properly means you’ll have it ready to create the same magic next year. Here are some simple and friendly tips to keep your fall items in great shape:

  • Faux pumpkins: Store these in a sturdy box or bin to avoid crushing or scratching them. If they’re glittered or painted, wrap them in tissue paper for extra protection.
  • Cloth napkins and placemats: Wash and fold them neatly before storing in a drawer or storage box. Add a lavender sachet for a touch of freshness when you use them again.
  • Candles: Wrap your votive candles individually with tissue paper to prevent scratches or wax transfer. Store them in a cool, dry spot to avoid melting.
  • Autumn leaves and foliage: If you use faux leaves and faux foliage, place them in a sealed container to keep them dust-free and vibrant. If they’re real, consider drying them first to preserve their beauty for future use.

Taking a little extra care now ensures your cozy cottage autumn tablescape will be just as inviting and ready to enjoy next autumn (fall)! 🍂
