Ingredients

For the Peach Simple Syrup

  • Organic cane sugar – This sweetens the syrup while helping create the smooth consistency that blends beautifully into the tea. Organic cane sugar has a clean flavor that lets the fresh peaches shine.
  • Water – Water dissolves the sugar and gently cooks the peaches to create the syrup. Using equal parts sugar and water produces a classic simple syrup that’s easy to stir into cold drinks.
  • Ripe peaches, peeled and diced – Fresh ripe peaches provide the natural peach flavor that makes this recipe stand out. The riper the peaches, the sweeter and more fragrant your finished tea will be. White peaches also work if you prefer a slightly milder, floral peach flavor.

For the Sweet Tea

  • Family-size black tea bags or regular black tea bags (or loose leaf black tea) – Black tea creates the classic rich flavor that pairs beautifully with peaches. English Breakfast, Orange Pekoe, or Ceylon tea are all excellent choices if you’re using loose leaf tea.
  • Water – Half of the water is used to brew a concentrated tea, while the remaining cold water balances the strength and quickly cools the pitcher.
  • Ice – Plenty of ice keeps the tea cold and refreshing without requiring a long chill time before serving.

Variations & Add-Ins

  • Make it unsweetened – Brew the tea as directed and add only a small amount of Peach Simple Syrup, or leave it out entirely for a lightly flavored peach tea.
  • Use green tea – Substitute green tea for black tea if you prefer a lighter, more delicate flavor. Reduce the steeping time to avoid bitterness.
  • Try sparkling peach tea – Fill each glass with ice and top the finished tea with sparkling water just before serving for a bubbly summer drink.
  • Make an Arnold Palmer – Combine equal parts Peach Iced Tea and Peach Lemonade for a refreshing peach twist on the classic Arnold Palmer.
  • Add fresh herbs – Garnish with fresh mint or basil for extra garden-fresh flavor that complements the peaches beautifully.

Recipe Tips

Use homemade Peach Simple Syrup for the best flavor – Making the syrup from fresh peaches gives this tea a natural peach flavor that’s difficult to achieve with bottled syrups. It’s worth making a batch of Peach Simple Syrup first since you can also use it in Peach Lemonade and other summer drinks.

Yellow peaches create the boldest flavor – Yellow peaches have a richer, more classic peach flavor that stands out beautifully in homemade Peach Iced Tea. White peaches work too, producing a lighter, slightly floral tea that’s just as refreshing.

Double the recipe for entertaining – This recipe scales beautifully for backyard barbecues, church picnics, and family reunions. Prepare the Peach Simple Syrup a day ahead and simply double the tea ingredients to fill a large beverage dispenser.

Choose a good black tea – Black tea provides the rich, classic flavor that holds up well to the sweetness of the peaches. Ceylon, English Breakfast, and Orange Pekoe all make excellent choices, while loose leaf tea often produces a fuller flavor than tea bags.

Try not to over-steep the tea – A longer steep doesn’t necessarily make better tea. Around 25 to 30 minutes creates a bold tea that still tastes smooth, while steeping beyond 45 minutes can introduce bitterness that’s difficult to balance.

Add the syrup gradually – Everyone enjoys sweet tea a little differently. Stir in the peach syrup a little at a time and taste as you go until it reaches your preferred sweetness.

Chill before serving if possible – Although you can serve the tea immediately over plenty of ice, allowing the pitcher to chill in the refrigerator for an hour gives the peach and tea flavors more time to come together.

Don’t dilute the tea – If you’re making Peach Iced Tea ahead of time, chill the pitcher in the refrigerator instead of relying on lots of ice. Add ice directly to individual glasses so the tea stays full of fresh peach flavor.

Garnish just before serving – Fresh peach slices, lemon slices, and add mint just before serving so it stays bright and fragrant instead of turning dark in the pitcher.

Instructions

  1. Make the Peach Simple Syrup – In a small saucepan, combine the organic cane sugar, water, and diced peaches. Bring to a gentle boil over medium heat, stirring until the sugar has completely dissolved.
  2. Mash and steep the peaches – Reduce the heat to low and gently mash the peaches with the back of a wooden spoon to release their juices. Remove the saucepan from the heat, cover, and allow the syrup to steep for 25 to 30 minutes.
  3. Strain the syrup – Pour the syrup through a fine-mesh strainer into a bowl or jar, pressing gently on the peaches to extract as much syrup as possible. Discard the solids.
  4. Brew the tea – Bring 4 cups of water to a boil in a large saucepan. Remove from the heat and add the tea bags or loose leaf tea. Steep for 25 to 30 minutes, depending on how strong you like your tea.
  5. Remove the tea – Remove the tea bags or strain out the loose leaf tea.
  6. Build the pitcher – Pour the brewed tea into a large pitcher and stir in the remaining 4 cups of cold water.
  7. Sweeten the tea – Add the prepared Peach Simple Syrup and stir well. Taste and adjust the sweetness by adding more or less syrup until it reaches your preferred flavor.
  8. Chill and serve – Refrigerate until thoroughly chilled or serve immediately over plenty of ice. Garnish with fresh peach slices, lemon slices, or fresh mint if desired.

Freezing and Storage

  • Refrigerator – Store Peach Iced Tea in a covered pitcher or airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. Stir well before serving if any natural separation occurs.
  • Make ahead – Prepare both the Peach Simple Syrup and the brewed tea a day in advance. Combine them just before serving or store them separately until needed for the freshest flavor.
  • Freeze the syrup – Leftover Peach Simple Syrup freezes beautifully. Store it in freezer-safe containers or ice cube trays for up to 3 months, then thaw in the refrigerator before using.
  • Freezing the tea – While you can freeze the finished tea, the flavor is at its best when enjoyed fresh. If frozen, thaw overnight in the refrigerator and stir well before serving.
